Protest against the cuts! Lobby the Lib Dem Conference on 19th September

UNISON will be protesting against austerity measures at the LibDem Conference in Liverpool

UNISON, along with the Trades Union Congress, other trade unions and a number of other  activists will be demonstrating at the Liberal Democrats’ September conference in Liverpool, in protest against the harsh and potentially damaging cutbacks to vital public services which the coalition Government has set in its austerity agenda.

NWAS UNISON is urging all members who can attend to join us at the demonstration which assembles outside Salt House Dock in Liverpool at 12 midday on Sunday 19th September.

A TUC spokesperson said: “The Government’s cuts are already damaging jobs and services. Much worse will come in October’s spending review.

“Ministers tell us that there is no alternative. But the cuts won’t just hit vital services, they threaten economic recovery. Coalition policies are not just about reducing the deficit, but undermining publicly accountable quality services.

“Take education. The school buildings programme has been cut to pay for new academies and so-called free schools that threaten every other school. Before polling day Conservatives told us that frontline services would be spared and the vulnerable protected. Liberal Democrats said that they would oppose eaerly cuts that hit the economy.”

A number of General Secretaries will be speaking including UNISON General Secretary Dave Prentis, who is one the main speakers at this lobby. The assembly point for the lobby is at Salt House Dock by the A5036 Gower Street entrance and commences at 12 noon on Sunday 19th September. The lobby is expected to last no more than a couple of hours.

For members who are unfamiliar with Liverpool city centre, the lobby is close to the river, the Albert Dock and the new Liverpool One Shopping Centre. This makes it an ideal opportunity for those wishing to make it a full day out with their family.

A UNISON spokesperson said: “This is the first opportunity we have had to show our distaste for Liberal Democrats course of action since the election, and a good turnout is essential to emphasise how angry our members are with the devastating cuts which have been announced by the coalition government.”
